Focus: Development and documentation of non-profit impact monitoring tools and systems, building on Java, Javascript, HTML5, and Android. Database configuration and development, mobile technology development

About Vera:

Harnessing the power of Salesforce’s Force.com platform, we use cloud and mobile technology to build low-cost, scale-able, and user-friendly data systems. Serving NGOs, social enterprises, foundations, research institutions, and government agencies—whose data systems rely almost exclusively on paper and bulky spreadsheets—we give organizations unprecedented access to their own data, changing the way they operate. We believe in the power of real-time analytics and data-driven decision-making to radically transform the efficiency and effectiveness of organizations, programs, and projects working for social change. We’ve worked with 45 different NGOs and have users in over three-dozen countries.Vera is a registered B Corporation, a 2012 Echoing Green Fellow, and a 2012 Dasra Social Impact Cohort Member.

Why We Do It:

In 2011 over  $1 billion of development assistance was allocated to M&E. Directly, much of this is wasted by organizations spending time managing antiquated paper-/Excel-/Access-based systems and chasing inaccessible data. More is wasted indirectly, when organizations use poor-quality data to make decisions and implement sub-optimal programs that could achieve outcomes more effectively and efficiently by leveraging existing, open source technologies.

The developer will primarily be responsible for Force.com configurations—Visualforce and Apex code, based on HTML and Java—in Vera sites and systems, as well as research and development on mobile data collection tools built in HTML5 and Android. • Gain valuable experience and knowledge of Salesforce (the world’s leading cloud-computing platform currently used by more than 100,000 for-profit and 16,000 non-profit organizations worldwide) and the implementation of M&E systems in the fields of health, education, and development

Requirements:

  • Fluency with Java, Android, HTML5, JavaScript, CSS, and/or XML

  • Familiarity APEX[1], PHP, ArcGIS, Python, MySQL, JavaRosa and/or Force.com a plus

  • Interest in social service work or international development

  • Excellent organizational skills and passion for fine details

  • Diligent work ethic and proven ability to work with drive and enthusiasm

  • Insatiable desire to expand skills and innovate to help build the capacity of others

  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple projects
