I am Ashish, founder of Codelearn (www.codelearn.org) – a website in online learning to code space. There are numerous other sites there (most notably Codecademy) in the space. We did not like the way they teach to code because most hackers do not intend to learn to code that way. Hackers prefer to learn by building real apps. That is how we picked up technologies too. So at Codelearn, we emulated the process.

The course/tutorial at Codelearn starts with suggestion of an app to build. The rest of the course then teaches the essentials & step by step building. To facilitate quick learning – a **real** application development environment is provided *inside the browser* . We call it Codelearn Playground & it is our main USP. The user can *actually* build an app inside Playground. He can continue to do so without needing to install on his PC. Forever.

So that was the rosy part. Now comes the not-so-rosy one. After running Codelearn for around 8 months, we realized that the newbies who want to learn to code, might have different mindset than what we had. Why so – because the user sign up on our site did not grow with the kind of elusive hockey stick curve that we expected. We decided – its time to actually sit down with one of our target audience to see how actually he/she perceived various different other sites (including Codelearn) & how the sites helped him/her to learn.

So we came up with the proposition. Why not work with someone who has

- Good writing skills

- Looking to learn to code. Possibly create his own web/mobile app

Guide him/her with what to do next (like picking up an app, reviewing the code he is writing & appropriately pointing him to right resource), eventually sponsoring his learning . In return – the person writes about his learning journey which would eventually go on Codelearn blog.

This will help us in two ways

- We get to see the life-cycle of a user from our target segment end to end. Priceless.

- We get to figure out at what stage of the life-cycle Codelearn contributed the best to the person’s learning.

- The person will eventually do a review of which sites he took & what really helped him. We think that is a good guiding-tutorial for someone who is looking to learn to code.

So – call to action – we are looking for this one (or probably two) person.

**What we offer** – We are ready to pay hourly/per blog basis. We will sponsor learning at various different sites that requires the user to register/pay. We will guide you on how to start the learning process & initially some of the websites where you can learn. We will review your app & suggest where you should head next.

**What we need** – Decent (not really out of the world) writing skills, passion (not really Mallika Sherawat / Angelina Jolie kinds) & willingness to learn new web technologies, discipline to balance the learning & writing. You can work with us from our office in Bangalore or remotely. Anything is fine. The engagement will get done once you are able to have a real kick-ass web application in technology called ‘Ruby on Rails’.

**Plus** – If you have been writing & have a good blog. It need not be tech blog. Any attempts you made to learn to code or create your own app.

Key Functions

The Developer will work with a distributed management team based in Bangalore, Singapore and North America.

· Report into the Product Manager and Director of Technology

· Work with tech team in Singapore, Hong Kong and beyond.

· Assist in architecting software solutions based on internal briefs.

· Refactoring and optimising for stability and security.

· Develop on our stack of Ruby on Rails, HTML/CSS/JS frameworks, xSQL and the Heroku/AWS hosting environment. Integrating with some Windows infrastructure will also be required.

Project Details

1) MaxusMobile – Our in house trading app (iOS + Android)

· Maintenance and extension/adaptation of existing parsing scripts that perform the following:

Log into FTP or Gmail

Parse attachments or HTML for tabular data

Copy values to MySQL DB

· Build Scripts to pull in data from varied sources and create API end points.

· Adapt scripts for multiple markets and build a configuration/setup system to enable future additions

2) MaxusInsights – Dashboard & Visualization Platform

· Maintenance, refactoring/optimisation and extension/adaptation of data management services (ruby) to parse XML/CSV data from email<>FTP

· Build Ruby<>MSSQL connector for connection to a centralised GroupM’s data repository.

· Generate BYO infographics (using d3.js) from MSSQL, based on provided rule-sets.

· Generate Timeline of key campaign events, based on provided rule-sets. (e.g http://timeline.verite.co/)

Problem:

We have the Frilp Beta ready on Web and currently being used by the first set of early adopters. We are currently researching about Frilp being deployed both for Indian and USA market. We are putting together a recommendation framework which can determine similar users, similar businesses using Frilp’s native data and data obtained from external sources: Facebook, linked-in, Twitter & Phone-book for each frilp user. In a nutshell we don’t yet have a scalable analytics/algorithm framework that provides recommendation (suggestions) by analyzing external and internal data of users. The recommendation framework will suggest the right-users who are experts & who can be trusted for a specific topic, thus engaging users and helping them quickly discover the right information they need. We have just started building the framework and I’m inviting you to come in, take ownership and shape the framework from scratch. You can check out our first version of the algorithm, which in realtime, groups your facebook friends who share similar traits here.

 

Role:

1. Design and develop recommendation system using internal Frilp data and external Facebook, linked-in & Twitter data of users.

2. Build the Frilp Algorithm team from ground-up in near future.

 

What we expect:

We are looking for a Hands-on Senior data scientist, One who is passionate, experienced and knowledged about existing libraries and tools needed to build recommendation systems ground-up. We are not looking for an employee rather looking to add someone to our frilp core founding team.

 

Prefered Skill set:

1. Strong technical background and hands on in building recommendation system

2. Strong programming skills. Willing to learn Ruby on Rails. Since, our technology stack is based on Ruby on Rails.

3. Experience in building systems using one or more of the following techniques: NLP, Data Mining, Data Normalization, Collaborative Filtering. Working with large data sets added advantage.

4. 3+ years of experience in the recommendations/analytics space
